The mentors on The Voice Australia are more used to hearing contestants give their take on well-known pop songs.

But on Monday night the show's norms were thrown out of the window as a contender for the most bizarre auditionee ever took to the stage.

Ben Palumbo, 39, bemused the coaches with an extremely high-pitched soprano performance of Mozart's Der Hölle Rache.
