Hamish Macdonald returns to The Sunday Project after coming out as gay

Hamish Macdonald came out as gay last week, when he proudly held hands with his partner Jacob Fitzroy on the red carpet at GQ's Gentleman's Ball in Melbourne.

But it was business as usual for the 38-year-old journalist on Sunday as he made his first television appearance since the historic announcement.

Hosting the weekend edition of The Project alongside Susie Youssef, Chris Bath, Tim Blackwell, Hamish did not mention the fact his personal life had made headlines.

Instead, the program focused on the news of the day, including Ashleigh Barty's win at the French Open and the AFP raids on journalists' homes.

It comes after Hamish made his first red carpet appearance with his boyfriend, Jacob, on Thursday night at the GQ Gentlemen's Ball in Melbourne.

Following the event, he shared a professional photo of the couple to Instagram alongside a love heart emoji and the hashtag #GQball.
