Keeping Up With The Kardashians: Kim and Kris Jenner get emotional

It was, Kris Jenner said, 'a changing of the guards.'

After nearly 40 years of throwing her family's Christmas party, the momager stepped down and let her daughter Kim Kardashian West and husband Kanye West assume responsibility for it on Keeping Up with the Kardashians Sunday night.

The resulting party—an otherworldly all-white affair inspired by Whoville, the town featured in Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Who Stole Christmas—boasted everything from a candy bar and lollipop stations to igloos, snow and a sledding hill and was rumored to cost $1.3 million.

John Legend performed his hit, All of Me, both Santa and the Grinch paid visits, and the roster of star-studded guests included Sia, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, Paris Hilton and Dave Chappell.

But getting there wasn't a painless process for anyone.

'I love the holidays and I'm obsessed with Christmas,' explained Kris, 63, in a confessional after her daughter asked to take over planning for Christmas 2018. 'Christmas means so much to me and my kids. I plan the party favors and Santa and food, and I look forward to it every year.'

'I just think the kids have evolved from it just being, like, your friends,' her daughter, 38, told her as the two sat together at the Kardashian-West home. 'It's kind of like this older party.'

'There's reindeer and hot dog on a stick,' protested Kris.

'Like, there's literally people we don't know,' retorted Kim.

'Our Christmas Eve party was this fun party that I just remember being friends and family and my grandparents and cousins, and it was just the best night ever,' the lawyer-in-training said. 'But my mom has been doing It for so long that it's turned into something different, like it's just kind of a party just for my Mom, and mostly her friends.'

In a flashback, she was even more honest, calling it 'a sh*tshow.' 

'The time has come that maybe we switch the location and have it here at our house,' Kim told her mom, adding that she'd have husband Kanye West, 42, come up with ideas. 'We just have a different vibe and a different energy. And we all collectively, all the siblings feel that way.'

'So I'm outnumbered,' said Kris, growing teary at the thought of not getting to throw the party at her house for the first time.

'You're outnumbered,' Kim replied, seeking her blessing.

She starred to tear up, too. 'You're making me cry, seeing you cry,' she told her mother. 'It's just a party.'

'I know, but it's not just a party,' Kris pointed out. 'It's changing of the guards. It means I'm getting old.'

'You'll have fun, don't worry—you'll love it,' Kim promised.

In the planning stages, Kim ended up with a giant vision board, full of Kanye's ideas. As she showed it to sister Khloé Kardashian, 34, the younger woman stood openmouthed, repeatedly saying, "Oh my g**."'

Kim called it a West Winter Wonderland.

Khloé had a good laugh while sitting in the front seat of a shared town car later, when she heard Kim discussing the party's cost with Kanye.

'I really need you to not be upset, but this is so inappropriate,' Kim was overheard telling her husband on the phone. 'That is so much money for a party for one night.'

'First of all, we can't put snow in the street from the city,' she continued. 'We do not need an ice skating rink. No, I don't want to ruin our whole landscaping. I literally will cancel the whole party.'

'Kanye definitely wants to deliver and just thinks, you know, "Here," and then I come in as a buzzkill like, "Wait a minute, we need to scale back,"' Kim said in a confessional, saying finances stressed her out.

Khloé stopped laughing, however, when she heard about Kim's decision to invite Caitlyn Jenner, Kris' ex, to the party.

'I thought I was doing the right thing,' Kim told Khloé and their sister Kourtney, 40, defensively as the three shared a meal together. 'I just wanted peace. I thought, 'the more the merrier!"'

'But what about mom's peace?' asked Khloé, referencing the fact that Kris had been deeply upset by the way she was depicted in 69-year-old Caitlyn's 2017 autobiography, The Secrets of My Life.

Kim called her mother, and told her she'd dis-invite Caitlyn.

'I promise you, I'm fine,' Kris said. Just let it go. Vodka's my friend.'

Kim was getting freaked out. 'This is not how I thought it would be, taking over this party,' she explained. 'I want everyone to have fun… I thought it would be a good time, but between Khloé mad at me, Kanye mad, like—everyone's mad at me, and it's just not worth the stress.'

'I feel so bad,' she added, saying she just wanted her mom to have a good time and feel satisfied that she'd been right to pass the baton.

That wasn't all the drama on the home front. Her daughter North's hamster, Blacktail, a fancy bear, was found stiff and dead in its cage.
