Rob Lowe playing the Chief Constable of East Lincolnshire was implausible. But none of the locals mentioned he looked like the star of Wayne’s World or even said ‘phwoar!’ in Wild Bill, by Jim Shelley By Jim Shelley for MailOnline Published: 01:51 BST, 13 June 2019 | Updated: 01:55 BST, 13 June 2019 Viewcomments Wild Bill was surely the most absurd, implausible, cop show yet in the long history of completely unlikely crime series. Yes, even more than J-Lo’s Shades Of Blue or Marcella. Hard to believe I know. For a start Wild Bill was about a high-flying American cop who’d cleaned up the streets of San Diego, Denver, and Miami and now moved to Boston - not that one - as the new Chief Constable of… East Lincolnshire. Odd: Wild Bill was surely the most absurd, implausible, cop show yet in the long history of completely unlikely crime series. Yes that one. Hey, it could happen. Well no it probably couldn’t, sadly. Particularly if the pioneering police boss was not only as good-looking as Hollywood heartthrob Rob Lowe but looked exactly like him. (More handsome than ever if anything, even with the same dazzling blue eyes.) Then, even such a miracle did happen, we know for sure it wouldn’t be like Wild Bill. For a start Wild Bill was about a high-flying American cop who’d cleaned up the streets of San Diego, Denver, and Miami and now moved to Boston... in East Lincolnshire Perhaps it’s doing a disservice to Boston and East Lincolnshire but you’d think anyone as dishy as Bill Hixon would make a bit more of an impression. What made Wild Bill really implausible was that not one person even said ‘phwoar!’ let alone commented: ‘wow this new Chief Constable could be a film-star!’ And NO-ONE flattered him, sighing: ‘has anyone ever told you that you look exactly like Rob Lowe?!’ Unlikely: What made Wild Bill really implausible was that not one person even said ‘phwoar!’ let alone commented, ‘wow this new Chief Constable could be a film-star!’ Just as none of the characters in Luther, Marcella, or Shades Of Blue ever suggested: ‘you really look like a bit like Idris Elba/Anna Friel/Jennifer Lopez.’ Still, who needs realism? Frankly nothing really mattered when it was Rob Lowe – the star of Wayne’s World, The West Wing, and Austin Powers etc. The fact that Rob Lowe had agreed to be in any show on ITV was almost as hard to believe as the idea of him playing the Chief Constable of East Lincolnshire. His star quality, charm, and sheer overpowering handsomeness were so mesmerising (still) you didn’t care most of Bob Hixon’s first day/week in Boston (England) was total nonsense.
