She was thrown into the middle of a social media storm in March, when a photo of her kicking a goal during a match received a slew of misogynistic and violent comments. 

And on Wednesday, AFLW star Tayla Harris, 22, revealed the moment she found out that a seemingly innocent photo of her had been hijacked by vile trolls.

She told Daily Mail Australia at the Marie Claire and Bumble Glass Ceiling Awards in Sydney on Wednesday, that she got the unwelcome surprise while getting ready for bed and that her mother warned her not to go online.

'I opened my phone like I always do before bed to set an alarm for the next day and I saw all these notifications,' Tayla said.

'One was from mum saying don't look at social media.' 

Tayla went from a relatively unknown athlete to the face of AFLW overnight, after an image of her kicking a goal was uploaded to Seven's AFL page on March 18.
