explains why it was her OWN idea to give her character bangs ...

It's the shock TV makeover than has rocked and divided audiences worldwide.

And with viewers calling for the person behind her 'butchered' new locks to 'be jailed', Shailene Woodley has now defended her short blunt fringe on season 2 of Big Little Lies in an in-depth interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that it was her very own idea to get the haircut.

The actress, 27, explained that the new look was vital for her character Jane to 'move on with a new chapter' and 'be in control of her identity again' following the traumatic events of season one - which saw the unravelling of her sexual assault storyline.

Fans of Big Little Lies were thrilled at the return of the ocean-side drama series at the beginning of the month, and even more delighted at the addition of Meryl Streep, who wowed with a deafening scream scene in the first episode.

However, one thing that viewers weren't as taken by were Shailene's new tresses, which consisted of a darker choppy baby fringe in comparison to her longer, lighter locks in season one.

And despite making the admission in a previous interview that it was her own choice to get bangs for second season, Shailene gave more context to the situation in a revealing interview about her character Jane.

Taking into consideration Jane's backstory of rape by Perry (Alexander Skarsgård), Shailene explained: 'She carried this weight of not feeling in her own body because of what happened to her for eight years. She felt disconnected from her own identity on not just an emotional and mental level, but on a physical level as well.'

The culmination of season one saw Jane figuring out that her rapist was the husband of Celeste (Nicole Kidman) after she arrived in town for her a fresh start.

Perry was eventually pushed down a flight of stairs by Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) - which resulted in his death.
