It's 53 years since Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble and their modern stone age families officially left the small screen.

Now they could be back, according to Variety, but in a somewhat different format.

Actress-producer Elizabeth Banks is teaming up with Warner Bros Animation on an animated adult comedy series based on characters from the original cartoon that ran for six seasons and more than 150 episodes on ABC between 1960 and 1966.

The series followed the The Flintstones - Fred, Wilma, toddler daughter Pebbles, and family pet Dino - who live in Bedrock.

Of course, it also features their neighbors the Rubbles -Fred’s best friend Barney, Wilma’s best friend Betty, and their little boy, Bamm-Bamm.

There have been many spin-off television specials over the years and two live-action big screen films.
