Muriel's The Musical's Stephen Madsen on how he stays in shape playing ...

Playing the role of Olympic swimmer Alexander Shkuratov in Muriel's The Musical is going just swimmingly for Stephen Madsen.

However, the actor has certainly had to put in the hard yards to achieve and maintain his swimmer's eight-pack for the coveted role.

'It is a sh*tload of exercise,' Stephen, 26, told The Daily Telegraph on Saturday.

He added: 'I go to the gym five or six times a week on top of the three-hour show each just just to keep that swimmer shape so that it looks accurate when I get out of the pool.'

Stephen sticks to a vegetarian diet and does a lot of back, chest and leg exercises at the gym, he told the publication.

Muriel's The Musical is based on the hit movie of the same name, from 1994.

Muriel's is about two socially awkward girls - Muriel and Rhonda - who dream of a better life for themselves.

First-time actress Natalie Abbott, 23, plays the role of Muriel Heslop (made famous by Toni Collette, 46, in the movie), while Elizabeth Esguerra plays Rhonda Epinstalk (originally played by Rachel Griffiths, 50, in the film).

And in a bizarre twist of fate, Pippa Grandison, who rose to fame playing one of the bridesmaids in the film, plays Muriel's mother, Betty Heslop, in the new musical.
