Karl Stefanovic appeared on the Nine News Now Facebook show, hosted by his sister-in-law Sylvia Jeffreys, on Tuesday.

And the 45-year-old had a lot to say about KIIS FM shock jock Kyle Sandilands, who on Monday issued an apology after his tasteless Virgin Mary joke led to calls for his sacking from the radio network.

Asked by host Sylvia what he thought of the apology from his friend, Karl said at length: 'I thought it was genuine and I thought it was heartfelt.'

'I think he listened to many of the people who had spoken to him both inside and outside the industry. To me, it was very genuine'.

Sylvia asked Karl if he felt that calls for Kyle to be fired were justified.

'I don't think so,' the TV host said. 'I think Kyle is one of those people in the modern media landscape where it's incredibly difficult to be on that edge'.

He added: 'I am the last person in the world who will criticise someone saying things they regretted.'

'I thought it was a poor gag. But if you're going to get sacked for a gag, I would have got sacked long before I did at the start of the year,' Karl joked, referring to his dismissal from the Today show.

Karl added that, 'In the past there were a couple times where he went a bit far and maybe he was lucky to survive (but) I am Catholic and I took absolutely no offence at what he said'.

Sylvia compared Kyle's situation to footballer Israel Folau, who was sacked after making comments about the LGBTQI community.
