Ford V Ferrari skidded into pole position with $31 million at the weekend box office, way ahead of expectations and its nearest rival, Midway, with $8.75 million.
That means the other big opener, Charlie's Angels, could only scrape third with $8.6 million.
Ford V Ferrari, starring Matt Damon as Ford's car designer Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as race driver Ken Miles, also brought in $21.4 million outside of North America for a global haul of $52.4 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Second World War film Midway slipped from last week's top spot to second with $8.75 million, bringing its local haul to $35 million.
Starring Ed Skrein, Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans and Dennis Quaid among others, it's global take is $53.7 million.
Charlie's Angels is right behind with $8.6 million and could pass Midway when the final tally comes in.
However, it won't be enough to boost its disappointing performance, which had been expected to be in the $12 million range.
