's Mindhunter unlikely to be renewed for third season after show's cast released from contracts

Fans of 's Mindhunter are reeling at news that last year's second season may be its last.

On Thursday, Deadline.com reported that the streaming service has let cast options lapse, signalling that there's no plan for a third season any time soon.

That means the show's cast led by Holt McCallany and Jonathan Groff are free to accept other offers of work and are no longer contracted to be available for future filming for Mindhunter.

Mindhunter centered around two FBI agents played by McCallany and Groff who interview serial killers in order to learn how they think so they can apply that knowledge to solve cases.

It was based on the book about the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker and David Fincher, who helped build the brand with the House Of Cards series, served as showrunner for Mindhunter.

However, it appears that Fincher's desire to pursue other projects at has played a part in the decision to release the cast from their contracts.
