In the wild they can live for up to 25 years, but as pets their lifespan is usually much less.

So Laura Dern celebrated the long life of her goldfish, as he passed away after almost 15 years in her care.

The Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner took to her Instagram feed on Tuesday to share the sad news.

'RIP to our amazing goldfish we loved so much,' the Jurassic Park actress, 53, wrote alongside a shot of the white-hued fish.

'14 YEARS!!!!!!!!' she continued, marveling at the surprising staying power her pet exhibited during its long life.

In the image, the fish looks as though it's nibbling on a biscuit, which sits on a plate in the foreground in front of the fish tank.

Animals are clearly near and dear to Laura, whose Instagram profile photo shows her holding onto a dog's paws, smiling and looking into its eyes.
