The Toxic Avenger hailed from Troma Studios creators Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, who specialized in low-budget horror films.

The original film centered on Melvin (Mark Torgl), the janitor at a health club in fictional Tromaville, New Jersey, who is constantly harassed and ridiculed by customers.

One day he is being chased around the health club and accidentally falls into a vat of toxic waste, which hideously deforms him but also gives him superhuman strength.

The film was Troma's first horror film, with the company having focused on sex comedies up to that point, though due to the success of The Toxic Avengers, Troma almost exclusively made horror films ever since.

The film cost just $500,000 to make, though it was largely ignored upon release, it became a cult classic after a lengthy stay as a midnight movie at Bleecker Street Cinemas in New York City, starting in 1985.
