Love Island is nothing if not truly shocking television.

Far from only tuning in to see couples finding love, the drama keeps the UK captivated for eight long weeks of summer and in its five year history there have been explosive moments peppered throughout.

From full-frontal romps to wicked behaviour to ejections over physical fights, Love Island viewers have been shocked - and often disgruntled - with many alarming moments in the show history.

We take a look at the most explosive moments in show history...

TERRY AND EMMA'S OVER-COVER ROMP

SERIES TWO: 2016

Carpenter Terry Walsh and bombshell Emma-Jane Woodhams were the subject of one of the most shocking moments in Love Island history when they had full-frontal sex above a duvet, entirely uncovered and in a communal bedroom while their co-stars - and the nation - watched on.

Terry joined the show shortly after its launch, initially falling for Olivia Bowen, neé Buckland, before ditching her for Malin Andersson, who was then voted off.

He then fell for bombshell Emma-Jane, the ex-girlfriend of fellow Islander Tom Powell, with the duo growing ever closer much to Malin's chagrin on the outside as she watched on.

As their romance developed, Emma and Terry stunned fans and co-stars alike by having sex in the bedroom without shielding themselves as the whole room looked on in shock.

Emma revealed she had thought it was better to bed Terry without any covers so as to conceal the deed, as she believed it couldn't legally be aired on TV.

Unbeknownst to her, however, the scenes had played out on the show meaning it wasn't just her fellow islanders that had a front row seat, which eventually led to ITV being bombarded with anger from viewers.

The couple's actions led to a backlash, prompting complaints to be raised about the steamy scene, which aired at 9.01, but Love Island was later cleared by watchdog Ofcom who said 'no rules had been breached' by the show.

An Ofcom spokesperson said: 'We investigated a small number of complaints about a scene where two housemates had sex shortly after the watershed, but didn't find it breached broadcasting rules...

'The shots of the couple were very brief and relatively indistinct as a result of the use of a night vision camera. The tone was lightened by the focus on the housemates' reactions reduced the material's potential to cause offence.'

Expressing her regret over her actions once filming had wrapped, Emma later told new! magazine: 'There's not a day goes by I don't wish I hadn't done that.'

THE ROMP THAT COST THE CROWN: ZARA AND ALEX

SERIES TWO: 2016

Zara was left heartbroken by the hideaway drama

Zara was left heartbroken by the hideaway drama

Miss GB Zara Holland and bombshell Alex Bowen enjoyed a now-infamous night of passion in the hideaway after viewers had to choose two dates for the star to decide between - leading to her choosing Alex over James Khan.

Alex had spent most of the day flirting with his now-wife Olivia Bowen, neé Buckland, however he still accepted Zara's invitation into the hideaway, saying beforehand: 'When she did pick me I was just like s**t. I looked at Olivia and Olivia was like 'Oh no'', while Olivia also admitted: 'It's a bit gutting'.

Night vision cameras captured the evening in detail, leading to the destruction afterwards.

While Alex suffered little fallout from the moment, going on to be forgiven by Olivia, Zara was left beyond bereft when it was revealed she was to be stripped of her Miss Great Britain title due to misconduct.

Stating that her mother had fallen ill, Zara then left the villa and faced the storm at home.

She later said of the romp: 'It’s horrible. You know, I was in the moment, I was in the Hideaway. I’d had a few glasses of Champagne, I’m not blaming it on that...

'Earlier on that day we had a challenge and the new boys got to rate everyone in order of which they think is the hottest girl and how much banter there was. I was the fourth fittest girl and I didn’t apparently have much banter. you start to think ‘oh god am I really boring, am I not pretty’...

'Everything that day kind of contributed to it. I’m not making an excuse, I know I am my own person, and I made that decision. But it was the biggest mistake ever'.

Speaking in 2019, Zara said: 'You think you're on a summer holiday and you might find love, but you are in a posh prison where you don't know what time it is and a voice in a wall tells you what to do. That show screwed me up. I blame it for everything. What it does to the contestants is terrible'.

Alex and Olivia tied the knot in September 2018.

JON'S PROPOSAL

SERIES ONE: 2015

In the inaugural series of Love Island's reboot - following its initial and brief stint on-screens in 2005 - Jon Clark, later of TOWIE fame, popped the question to glamour model Hannah Elizabeth.

He wrote a poem for the star, penning: 'Love is mad, love is crazy, love makes me feel like a daisy. Love is scary, love is cool though. Loving you makes me feel like a rainbow'.

He later said: 'For us to win Love Island as a couple would just finish off the fairytale story that we’ve started. We met each other the first day, we’ve come on leaps and bounds, we’ve got to know each others. Sh*t bits, ugly bits, bad bits, great bits, lovely bits, sexy bits… you’ve watched us grow as a couple into where we are now',

Hannah added: 'I’ve met the love of my life and winning Love Island would just help start our future together'. Their romance ended catastrophically when Hannah slammed Jon for his treatment of her through their relationship.

Kady McDermott caused shockwaves when she engaged in a physical fight with fleeting star Malia Arkian.

In June 2016, Malia was ejected from the villa just hours after her grand arrival, after she became locked in an 'altercation' with Kady over Kady's love-interest and later boyfriend Scott Thomas.

When she entered the show, Malia, showed a romantic interest in Scott and later got to know him on a date.

Appearing jealous over Scott's date, Kady decided to get to know the newcomer by the fire pit at the luxury Majorca mansion, however, during an unfortunate accident, Kady then spilt drink on Malia's leg.

Believing the act was deliberate, Malia said: 'If you wanna speak to me, just come in there. You don't do that with me, not at all.'

Kady then stood up and shouted back: 'I swear to God, if you want to get rowdy… that's a f**king joke. Do you honestly think I'd waste my wine over you? It was a f**king accident.'

Malia replied: 'Shut up you b**ch. Who the f**k do you think you are?' The girls then erupted into an argument and during that time an altercation took place, where Malia was alleged to have 'shoved' Kady, leading to ejection.

While Love Island viewers were not given full access to the scenes at the time, in 2019, Kady alleged that she was punched so hard by Malia that she bled. Kady took to Twitter to announce: 'She punched me in the nose after and gave me a nose bleed but they didn’t show it as too graphic'.

In July 2018, Kady claimed she called the police after Malia 'made threats' towards her in a Twitter row - after which she refused to apologise. Malia went on to dismiss her claims and demand Kady stop mentioning her name.

DANI'S HEARTACHE... AND THE OFCOM RECORD

SERIES FOUR: 2018

Dani Dyer's treatment from producers led to a record breaking number of Ofcom complaints

Dani Dyer's treatment from producers led to a record breaking number of Ofcom complaints

Back in 2018, Love Island broke a new record for receiving the most amount of complaints ever for a single instalment of the show at the time, with the tally reaching 2500 - in a jump from 650 in the space of 48 hours.

The complaints stemmed from producers' 'cruel' decision to show Dani Dyer a clip of her boyfriend Jack Fincham, coming face to face with his ex-girlfriend Ellie Jones, implying there was something unsavory afoot.

Dani was left distressed and weeping, panicked about what Jack was getting up to - toying with her emotions yet Jack had barely spoken to Ellie, remaining loyal to Dani throughout.

An Ofcom spokesperson confirmed this was the highest number of complaints about a single issue in Love Island history at that time. They also added that each one will be assessed against the broadcasting code.'

At the time, before the complaints racked up further, Ofcom said: 'We are considering these complaints against our broadcasting rules, before deciding whether or not to investigate.'

Dani had burst into tears saying she knew her romance was 'too good to be true', yet late host of the show Caroline Flack justified producers' cruel actions by saying the point of the show is to 'test relationships.'

The scenario worried viewers so much that it was compared to Romeo and Juliet's tragic Shakespearean ending. Viewers of the show took to Twitter on Sunday night to write: 'Love Island producers sending Dani that video is literally like when Romeo thought Juliet had died but was acc sleeping #loveisland.'

'That was a cruel cruel move on poor Dani,' one person raged, as another posted 'Dani if only you knew how Jack really feels about you! Cruel this is. Reunite them at once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

Jack and Dani went on to win the show.
