Samuel Johnson will spend weeks in hospital after being hit by a car and suffering head injuries last weekend.

The actor's older sister Hilde Hinton shared the update in a post to Facebook on Friday, revealing she had been to visit the 43-year-old as he recovers.

'I got to see Sam today! All the phone calls in the world aren't the same as being able to touch his actual face. I couldn't help it, I cried,' she wrote on the official page of their charity, Love My Sister.

'He said he wanted to thank the doctors, the nurses and the ward staff for all the wonderful care he's receiving (me too, x 1,000). And, to all the carers out there, he's said thank you before – but he wanted to say it again (as do I). Flanks'.

She went on: 'He misses being at work and, because it's the first thing he asks about, I've been giving him daily updates from LYS HQ.  They're busy taking care of everything until he can return, which makes him happy.

'They reckon he'll be out of hospital in a couple of weeks, so I'll hand him back our Facebook page (for now - *wink*) and let him do the next update'.

Hilde first revealed news of the accident news on Monday, writing on Facebook: 'I wish I didn't have to tell you this. Early Saturday night Sam was on his way to visit family when he was accidentally hit by a car.

'Our Ambos got him picked up and tucked away safely in hospital in record time. I followed them in.
