Candice Brown has revealed that opening up about her mental health battle in her new book had 'nearly broke' her as she was 'terrified' of speaking openly about her issues.

In quotes from her book, Happy Cooking, as revealed in The Sun, the Great British Bake Off star, 36, detailed her struggle with her anxiety, admitting: 'I have had days where I didn’t want to get out of bed.'

Candice, who won the cooking show in 2016, told how she's had the 'hardest' and 'most difficult' year of her life', in the wake of her split from husband Liam Macaulay, her ADHD diagnosis and her pub suffering amid the pandemic.

And in candid words from her book, Candice admitted how hard it was opening up about the difficulties she's faced in her life, adding that getting her feelings 'on paper' was one of the most 'toughest' things she had to do.

She explained: 'This book is testament to the fact that every day I just about put one foot in front of the other and I am here. Ironic that a book about food (my favourite thing) and mental health has nearly broken me. But in truth it has.'

She went on: 'I am laying myself bare, talking about things I’ve not really spoken about and quite frankly I am terrified.'

Opening up about her mental health struggles, Candice admitted there was days she 'didn't want to get out of bed' and had purposely cancelled planned or had not spoken to her loved ones, admitting she felt 'useless'.

However, the star credited cooking with getting her through her 'darkest days', noting that she feels in her 'comfort zone' when in her kitchen.

Candice went on to call cooking her 'saviour', commenting that the act of learning from her mistakes and working out how to improve them has been like 'therapy' to her .
