Olivia Munn opened up about the challenges she endured at the start of her successful acting career as she graced the cover of NewBeauty

The actress, 40, reflected on experiencing a culture shock upon relocating to Los Angeles, which she described as a 'whole other ballgame.'

'When I moved here, I’d go to auditions and I had it in my head that I was supposed to be dressed in my Sunday best, like I was going to church, she explained. 'While everyone else was wearing flats, skinny jeans and a tank top.'

Additionally, she recalled everyone portraying a 'Oh, I just showed up here' attitude, while she confessed she 'cared so, so much.' 

'That part was tough, but then I started noticing how thin people were and I kept trying to figure out how they did it, and that was a losing game,' she reflected. 

Munn continued: 'I wanted to try anything that would make me castable—but I honestly didn’t know what to do.' 

When she says she could not 'whittle down and be waif-thin to fit the look at the time,' she purchased a 'pair of jeans that were two sizes too big' to look 'thinner' than she was. 

'Then, I started booking, which just shows how warped the standards were.' she said.

Now, she stated she's happier because she is 'more comfortable embracing' who she is. 

For a long time, her insecurities were made worse by makeup artists that didn't 'didn’t really know how to work with an Amerasian face.'

She noted it's 'always hard being Chinese, Vietnamese and white' because some glam teams don't know how to accentuate her best features.
