Oscar winner Emerald Fennell and Borat 2 star Maria Bakalova lead the stars who have been invited to join the Academy.

It was revealed on Friday that the director, 35, and actress, 25, are among the 395 names alongside Steven Yeun and Laverne Cox to be asked to become members.

While the annual list is not as large as previous years, in 2020 819 were invited, it is a more diverse selection of stars with 46 per cent being women, and 39 per cent coming from under-represented racial communities.

It was also revealed that 53 per cent of the invitees were international, originating from 49 countries outside the US.

Sharing a statement, the Academy said: 'To enable steady future growth and to ensure the necessary infrastructure, staff resources and environment to support all Academy members, the number invited to membership was limited to roughly half that of recent years.'

Other stars included in the list include Robert Pattinson, Vanessa Kirby, Leslie Odom Jr, Yuh-Jung Youn, Janet Jackson, and HER.

Emerald has been invited in both the writers and directors branch, and is said to have to pick between the two if she chooses to become an Academy member.
