'I've got people getting in touch with me about glamorous grandfather competitions and all sorts of things like that. But no, my friend Bill has anointed himself Papa and I like it.

'It's like the Pope. There's an infallibility that goes with it. So I'd quite like my grandchildren to call me Papa. That would be nice.'

Ruth added: 'Congratulations, Declan and Jenny. We're very, very excited and can't wait to meet her.'

Eamonn's son Declan married his wife Jenny at Castle Leslie in Ireland surrounded by friends and family in 2018.

As well as Declan, Eamonn shares Rebecca, 30, and Niall, 28, with his ex-wife Gabrielle.

He split from Gabrielle, after ten years of marriage in 1996, as the pressure of commuting to London to present GMTV from their home in Belfast took its toll.

Prior to his announcement, Eamonn had cryptically said he didn't want people to be 'upset' but 'happy' over the news following a 'tough week'.

'I don't want you all in tears, I don't want you to be upset for me, I just want you to be happy. To be glad for what is about to happen and what I am going to announce at 11am today.'

In his typical tongue-in-cheek humour, Eamonn added: 'So, if you miss that... your loss!'
