Ariel Winter has thrown her support behind Britney Spears as the pop star fights her ongoing conservatorship battle.

In 2015 when she was a 17-year-old TV star on Modern Family Ariel succeeded in being emancipated after a legal battle involving her mother and sister.

'I support Britney. I think Britney is incredible. Her story’s incredibly moving. I listened to her testimony,' Ariel, 23, told Entertainment Tonight.

'I think she is so smart, so capable. She should absolutely be free to live her life, be in control of her life, in control of herself. I think it’s absurd that this is the situation that she has to be in. I think the justice system, unfortunately, is corrupt.'

Ariel added: 'I feel for her. I hope she gets to be in control of her life, her situation, everything, as soon as possible. I truly hope that people who have kept her away from doing that do suffer some sort of consequences, because she deserves all the happiness, the freedom, the love and the control of her life that she should have.'

Her own family drama went public in 2012 when her elder sister Shanelle Workman accused their mother Chrisoula of physical and emotional abuse towards Ariel.

At the time Ariel was just 14 years old and Shanelle, who is 20 years her senior, was asking for guardianship of her little sister.

Shanelle was quickly able to obtain temporary emergency custody and Ariel's father Glenn Workman got temporary control of his teenage daughter's estate.

It took until 2014 for the family to come to a pre-trial agreement whereby Shanelle would retain custody of Ariel throughout her minority.

Chrisoula staunchly denied the abuse allegations but after the agreement was reached she and Shanelle jointly said: 'The family has moved beyond the conflict.'

In May 2015 Ariel joyfully announced on social media: 'I am now officially
