As soon as Sam Newman heard about AFL star Dustin Martin's lacerated kidney, he knew exactly what the footballer was going through. 

The former Geelong Cats legend and media personality revealed he contacted the Tigers star in hospital soon after, according to the Herald Sun.  

The serious kidney injury from Friday's match has since ruled Dustin, 30, out for the remainder of the 2021 AFL season.

'I just wished him well as he suffered a similar fate,’ Newman, 75, said. 'I know what he’s going through, his is badly lacerated.'

The former host of The Footy Show confessed the injury made him reflect on his own experience losing a kidney during his playing days.

Sam, who notched up 300 games for the Cats, lost a kidney during a match in 1967 when he had a heavy collision with Collingwood midfielder Con Britt in the first quarter.
