Harry Potter star David Thewlis reveals he actually married wife Hermine FIVE ...

The Harry Potter star caused a stir last week when he referenced being married to his partner Hermine, on Instagram. 

And now David Thewlis, 58, has revealed that he actually married second wife Hermine five years ago, and insisted that their wedding wasn't a secret.

The actor - who was previously wed to Sara Sugarman from 1992 to 1994 and has daughter Gracie, 15, with ex-girlfriend Anna Friel - admitted he was surprised by the headlines his casual remark generated because they've been married for so long.

He told the Observer New Review: 'That was so weird. I mentioned my wife in passing on Instagram and suddenly the tabloids were reporting that, "I'd got married in a secret ceremony", like I'm a Freemason.

'I've been with my wife 10 years, we got married five years ago and I've worn a wedding ring ever since. Just because I didn't alert the [newspapers] didn't mean it was secret.'

The Naked star also credited video calls for keeping his relationship with Hermine 'alive' when they're working in separate countries.

Discussing his new novel, Shooting Martha - which is about a director mourning his dead wife - he said: 'Oddly enough, it pre-dated all the lockdown Zooms.

'I already did a lot of FaceTiming with my wife, Hermine. We were in separate countries for work and family reasons but it kept our relationship alive. We'd cook the same meal, drink the same wine and dine like we were at the same table.' 

His confirmation of them having been married for five years came days after David shocked fans with news of his marriage. 

The actor, who has starred in Seven Years in Tibet and Black Beauty, confirmed their relationship status in a gushing Instagram post, on Friday.

Alongside a series of loved-up photos of himself and his wife Hermine, David penned a lengthy caption, revealing it had been 'love at first sight' for the couple.  

David discussed his relationship with Hermine, in a rare post on social media, as his partner prepared to head to Paris to visit her family for the first time in over a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

'When I first met Hermine she was wearing a cherry red dress with white polka dots and smoking tobacco from a clay pipe.

'She told me she was the retired ringmistress of a travelling flea circus I thought she was joking, but it was true. Ça a été un coup de foudre [It was love at first sight],' David wrote.
