Matt Damon has left a potential Bourne sequel on the table.

The 50-year-old heartthrob previously starred in four films as the character of Jason Bourne originally created by novelist Robert Ludlum.

And in a new interview with Fatherly he revealed what it would take to get him to reprise his role as the amnesiac CIA assassin.

Matt noted that he would be amenable to the idea of starring in another Bourne movie only 'if we could crack the story.'

He explained: 'I love those movies. It was always about an external journey and an internal journey. And the internal journey was always driven by the fact that he didn't know who he was and we've kind of played that card.'

The action star added: 'So I don't know what the urgent internal journey is for the character this time around - if we can crack that, then we'll be off and running. But that's a tall order. He's got his memory back and what's next, you know?'

Robert Ludlum featured the character in three novels - The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum - before his death in 2001.

Matt portrayed him in film adaptations of all three of the original Ludlum novels, released between 2002 and 2007.

In spite of Robert's demise the character continued on in a string of novels by Eric Van Lustbader beginning with The Bourne Legacy.

Jeremy Renner starred in a 2012 movie of The Bourne Legacy - but the film was wildly different from the book and saw its leading man cast as a spy called Aaron Cross.

Matt declared in 2009 that he would only do another Bourne movie with Paul Greengrass who directed The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

'I wouldn’t do it without him but I don’t feel like he’s done with it totally. I think he’d change his mind if a good script came along,' Matt teased Entertainment Weekly.

Eventually Paul and Matt did team up for a 2016 film called Jason Bourne that
