At a time when much of the world is struggling with their mental health, Dr. Phil has hit the road to help people deal with their emotional trauma and he's doing it on their turf.

After nearly two decades in his famed Los Angeles studio, the renowned television host is changing the game for all-new primetime series, House Calls with Dr. Phil.

The good doctor exclusively sat down with DailyMailTV on the set of The Dr. Phil Show this week to give the ins and outs on how he is coming to the rescue of families in crisis by showing up at their front door.

'This is something I've really looked forward to for a long time,' Dr. Phil said.

He explained that while he loves the traditional talk show format of his Emmy-winning daytime series, where he can really dig into a single issue with a guest, he's been itching to get out and see people in their own environment.

'I've long wanted to go where the people live,' the host explained. 'That's where the triggers are. That's where things happen. And so, House Calls with Dr. Phil is me doing just that, making some good old fashioned house calls.'

The whole TV team, including longtime executive producer Carla Pennington, traveled to Denver, Atlanta, San Francisco and many more to help families in need, Dr. Phil style.

'And only one person in the family knows I'm coming,' Dr. Phil teased with a knowing grin.

'I think if you showed up at my front door, I don't know what my reaction would be. What was the reaction for the family members who didn't know you were coming?'

'Well, complete shock,' he quipped during his interview with DailyMailTV.

The families featured in each episode believe that they're auditioning for a reality show so they were fully aware of cameras being installed in the house but unaware of the true reason.

'What they don't know is that when we say cut, those cameras keep rolling, so we get to see what they say, what they do, how they think, how they behave, when they think nobody's watching and nobody's listening,' Dr. Phil explained. 'And that's where the rubber really meets the road.'

He went on to say that seeing people immersed in their own conflicts and drama is a 'rich environment' for healing and one that really helps him take his process to another
