Venice Film Festival 2021: Jonathan Rhys Meyers makes a rare public appearance

Jonathan Rhys Meyers made a rare public appearance on Wednesday night as he returned to the red carpet at Venice Film Festival 2021 after his DUI arrest last year.

The Irish actor, 44, looked smart in a black suit and T-shirt as he posed for the cameras alongside his glamorous wife of five years Mara Lane.

It comes after in November of last year, Meyers was arrested after he was involved in a single-car crash in Malibu and failed a sobriety test after officers arrived at the scene, although he was later released shortly after being booked. 

Jonathan looked happy and relaxed at the premiere for the upcoming movie Freaks Out, teaming his black suit with dark red shoes and a string pendant necklace. 

Meanwhile Mara wowed in a leggy cream gown that featured a sparkly belt and dramatic slit sleeves.

The producer and actress finished off her look with nude heels and wore her dark tresses in a pretty plait while opting for a dewy makeup look.

Although Meyers appears to be keeping himself busy with work this year, the troubled actor has been dealing with the fallout from his November DUI arrest and previous stints in rehab for alcoholism.

The performer has been in and out of recovery programs ever since 2005, when he originally entered a treatment center for his struggles with substance abuse.

His subsequent stints in rehab over the years, with the most recent occurring in 2017, were intermingled with public incidents, including an instance where he was arrested after assaulting an airport lounge employee in Paris.

In November of last year, Meyers was arrested after he was involved in a single-car crash in Malibu and failed a sobriety test after officers arrived at the scene, although he was later released shortly after being booked.

The following January, Us Weekly reported that he had been formally charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and another count of driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more.

The star has had a troubled history and in November 2011 was ordered by a French court to pay a restitution of €1,000 and was given a judgment of a suspended sentence for public intoxication 24 months earlier.  

Meyers also publicly apologised to his fans in 2015 for a 'minor relapse' after pictures surfaced of him on a street drinking straight from a bottle of vodka. 

In July 2018 the star vowed to stay sober after being detained following a drunken row with his wife Mara onboard a plane.

The Irish actor was on an American Airlines flight from Miami to Los Angeles with his wife Mara and their then one-year-old son Wolf when he allegedly got into a drunken fight with her.  

A fellow passenger, who was sitting in first class behind the actor, told the Sun Online that Meyers was behaving 'erratically' and had been intimidating other passengers throughout the flight.
