Former radio presenter Byron Cooke announced he has entered politics and is set to run for a seat in the Senate in Federal Parliament.

He shared the news on his podcast, The Byron Cooke Show, on Monday, telling listeners: 'I have joined the Sensible Centre party.'

'I will stand for election in the senate and my goal is to win a federal senate seat from Victoria and to be a voice for the sensible centre,' he added.

He appealed to people who 'don't strictly identify as a leftie or as a conservative' and to those who 'want to see everyone in this country do well' to consider his new party.

'I am confident that this party and many of our policies will make sense to you, and I would be honoured to represent you in Canberra,' he said.

Elsewhere, Byron said he wanted to a politician who 'can answer a DM on Instagram'.

'I want to be contactable. I can read. I've got common sense. I am all ears. I don't have one predisposed position politically. I personally, I'm not a lefty, I'm not a conservative,' he said.
