Samuel Johnson's doting sister helped nurse the actor back to health after he almost died in a shocking car accident in June this year.

And on Tuesday morning, Hilde Hinton couldn't hide her emotions as the pair discussed the near-fatal incident live on Sunrise - just four years after losing their other sibling Connie, 40, to breast cancer in 2017.

'I just thought - not Connie and Sam. I just pictured myself alone and it wasn't pretty,' Hilde said, as she began to get emotional while stood beside her brother, 43.

'It's been a long road. You find yourself putting a on brave face for the patient, and when you turn around to put the kettle on, your face falls.'

Speaking about Samuel's injuries, Hilde added: 'He was an absolute mess. He couldn't see, he couldn't put sentences together, he spoke in a Russian accent at the beginning.

'He had a cracked skull, his neck was plastered and he breathed in ground glass upon impact into his lungs.'

'That's what happens when you face plant a car, apparently you eat glass!' her brother responded in jest.

Samuel was driving to a relative's house on June 19 when he pulled over and crossed the road to relieve himself, because he was 'bursting' and didn't think he could wait an extra half hour.

As he went to return to his vehicle, he was accidentally struck by a car.

He later confirmed he had broken his skull, suffered bleeding on the brain, injured the ligaments in his neck, partially dislocated his jaw and endured deep bruising down the side of his body.

Discussing his lucky escape on Sunrise, he added: 'I'm here, so I'm really grateful. I basically nearly died.

'It's really common for people who have a brain injury to be quite emotional, and I was crying a lot, I was very emotional.
