Several jobs at the ABC are said to be hanging in the balance after claims made in the TV documentary and podcast series Juanita: A Family Mystery were proven to be false.

The public broadcaster has held meetings at both the management and board level to figure out who was responsible for airing the discredited information in the commissioned production, reports The Australian.

The two-part documentary, which focuses on the 1975 disappearance of journalist and activist Juanita Nielsen, premiered in September and has since been taken down from the ABC's streaming platform iview.

It was removed after recent information came to light that contradicted claims made by interviewee and retired lawyer John Innes.

Innes claimed he was 'placed' in Long Bay jail as an 'undercover investigator' to gather information from Eddie Trigg, who was a prime suspect in Nielsen's disappearance.

Trigg was jailed on conspiracy to murder but no one has ever been charged for Nielsen's murder.

Innes said in the documentary he knew 'where she was killed, how she was killed, who killed her, how much they got paid, and who paid him'.

Three weeks after the two-part special went to air, the ABC issued an apology stating that Mr Innes' claims were likely false as new information surfaced.

'Following publication, new information came to light casting serious doubt on some of Innes' claims. Some of this information had been unavailable to the content makers; some was available but not discovered,' the statement read.
