Fans of Australian comic Hannah Gadsby have taken to Twitter to slam Dave Chapelle after he said that the Nanette star isn't funny.

'Why the f**k is Dave Chapelle bringing Hannah Gadsby, a cisgender lesbian woman, into his weird transphobia?' raged one.

'Dave Chapelle saying that Hannah Gadsby is not funny just proves that Dave Chapelle doesn't know what's funny,' snapped another.

'I hope Hannah Gadsby calls her next special "David" and it's just a one hour lecture destroying Dave Chapelle,' added another.

The social media backlash is in response to a defiant video Chapelle shared to Instagram on Monday, after his comments about transgender people in his Netflix special The Closer outraged select members of the LGBTQ community.

Chappelle, 48, and Netflix have been criticised by external activists, viewers and organisations in light of the controversial stand-up show - including a response from Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby, who has two comedy specials on the platform that cover homophobia and sexism.

In a video shared with his 2.3million followers, Chappelle reserved a scathing mention for Gadsby - listing one of his three conditions to meet with members of the trans community be that they must 'admit Hannah Gadsby is not funny'.

His two other conditions were that they must view The Closer from start to finish, and that he will choose the time and place of said meeting.

Chappelle courted controversy with his jokes in which he asserts 'gender is a fact', and criticises what he says is the thin skin of the trans community.

The jokes were based upon earlier observations made by Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who in 2019 stated that transgender women were not actually women and were a threat to her identity.

On Monday, Chappelle spoke out for the first time about the controversy in a five minute video which was posted to Instagram.

'To the transgender community, I am more than willing to give you an audience, but you will not summon me,' Chappelle stated.

'I am not bending to anyone's demands, and if you want to meet with me, I am more than willing to, but I have some conditions.

'First of all, you cannot come if you have not
