Shonda Rhimes is opening up on the future of her hit Netflix series Bridgerton.

The 51-year-old producer, speaking with Variety Wednesday, said that she can see the series - which has been renewed through a fourth season - to continue to thrive based on the characters and potential storylines.

'There are eight Bridgerton siblings, and as far as I’m concerned, there are eight Bridgerton seasons,' she told the outlet. 'And maybe more.'

Rhimes told the outlet that she was surprised by the reaction from the public to news that Regé-Jean Page, who portrayed Simon Basset on the show, was not going to be on season two of the series.

'I don’t think I expected everybody to have such a reaction to it,' Rhimes told the outlet. 'My assumption of what people knew of romance novels was … I overestimated a great deal.'

Rhimes said she understood that 'people’s attachment to couples is real ... and I think that means success. But I do understand their despair.'

She referenced the romance between the Basset character and Daphne Bridgerton, portrayed by Phoebe Dynevor.
