Grease star and Australian icon Olivia Newton-John has been honoured by the Japanese Government for her contribution to music over her decade-long career. 

The singer, 73, has received the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun for her music and for fostering relations between the two countries.

'It was a wonderful surprise to be awarded the Order of the Rising Sun. As an Australian, I feel very honoured,' Olivia said in a video message.

'I first visited Japan in 1972 and since then I have been back more than 10 times, one of m favourite countries and favourite people.'  

Olivia previously performed in a memorial concert in Japan in 2015, after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011.
