Bert Newton's best friend and former co-star Susie Elelmen spoke of his wife Patti Newton's raw grief ahead of TV icon's state funeral on Friday.

Elelman, who appeared on Good Morning Australia with Bert for years, said Patti is absolutely 'shattered' and her 'heart is broken'. 

Appearing on the Today show, Karl Stefanovic asked Elelman how Patti was holding up.

'Understandably, she is shattered,' the TV presenter said. 

'She said to me her heart has broken, but Bert is now at peace.'
