SBS has confirmed plans to launch a dedicated 24-hour news channel in 2022 as part of a further expansion of its multilingual services.

The station, called SBS WorldWatch, will air from early next year and will feature news bulletins from international broadcasters around the world in more than 30 languages.

The launch will include two new SBS-produced prime time TV bulletins in Arabic and Mandarin.

'SBS is the most multilingual broadcaster in the world and we are continuing to evolve our services, finding new and innovative ways to enhance and strengthen our language offering across platforms,' said SBS Managing Director James Taylor.

Mr Taylor said the broadcaster's aim by launching SBS WorldWatch is for its 'trusted news coverage' to be made 'increasingly accessible to audiences'.

He added: 'Since it was established, SBS has been providing opportunities for Australians to connect with news, information and entertainment in their preferred language.'
