Kelly Clarkson admitted that she was 'feeling alone,' lost' and 'plain sad' while appearing in her new holiday special, entitled Kelly Clarkson Presents: When Christmas Comes Around.

In a clip from the featurette, which originally aired on NBC on Wednesday night, the 39-year-old singer bared her feelings to the public while performing the track Merry Christmas (To the One I Used to Know).

The special aired during her ongoing divorce from her former husband, Brandon Blackstock, with whom she shares two children.

Clarkson began her performance by expressing that she had dealt with strong emotions while penning the new track. 

'I'm gonna be real with y'all: When I wrote this next song, I was crying my face off, which happens even at Christmastime, everyone,' she stated.

The American Idol winner then noted that she was partially inspired to pen the track after caring for her daughter River and son Remington, aged seven and five, respectively. 

'I had just put my kids to bed, and I was just going through it, having a really hard time,' she stated.

The performer went on to express that she worked on the song in an effort to provide solace to individuals who may not be having the best Christmastime experiences. 

'It's been a really tough year for a lot of us. And I wrote this song for me, but also because there aren't many holiday songs for people feeling alone or lost or just plain sad,' she said.
