Jamie Dornan has detailed being trapped in quarantine in Australia while his father died over 10,000 miles away in Belfast.

The actor, 39, was isolating in a hotel ahead of filming The Tourist in Australia and had four days left of his quarantine when he received the devastating news that his father Jim had died from coronavirus

But with travel and quarantine restrictions firmly in place, he was unable to fly back to his native Northern Ireland to be with his family at the heartbreaking time, with Jamie describing his 2021 as the 'worst' and hardest' year of his life.

World renowned obstetrician Jim died in March aged 73 after contracting the virus after going into hospital for a routine knee operation. 

And Jamie, who had not seen his father in 18 months due to lockdown and filming, told how he understood the trauma so many people had been through amidst the global pandemic as he coped with his own devastating loss. 

He told The Sun: 'It’s been a brutal time for lots of reasons and for lots of people. We’re all just trying to ride it out and come out the other side — and hope we’ve got our heads intact.'

The leading man has recently won praise for his role in Sir Kenneth Brannagh's Belfast, which portrays one family's experience during The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

And Jim, who was a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist in Belfast and even had a picture with Kenneth at home, was proud of his son's role in the film, but sadly is no longer around to see it.

With the heartbreaking loss of his father, the 50 Shades Of Grey star admitted that 2021 had become 'the worst year... and the hardest' of his life, adding: 'I’ve been subjected, early on in my life and now, to a lot of pain and loss.'

The early loss he referred to was the death of his mother Lorna from pancreatic cancer when he was just 16,
