Having become of the most successful bands in the world, you would think Bono would be proud to be the frontman of U2.

But the singer has claimed he does not like the band's name and finds most of their songs cringeworthy.

The 61-year-old, who has been a part of the band since its formation in 1976, told the Awards Chatter podcast: 'I still don't [like the name]. I really don't.

'So the U2 if we thought the implication and the number - in our head it was like the spy plane, U boat, it was futuristic - as it turned out to imply this kind of acquiescence, no I don't like that name.

'Paul McGuinness, our first manager did say "look, it's a great name, it's going to look good on a T-shirt, a letter and a number".

Bono also admitted that he cringes at most of their songs and can't listen to his voice in their early albums as he has only recently been able to sing well.
