US singer Meat Loaf, born Marvin Lee Aday, passed away on Friday at age 74.

As as the world continues to mourn him, his friend and Aussie music promoter Harley Medcalf has shared the heartbreaking moment he missed a call from the rocker on his deathbed.

'I woke up yesterday morning, I found a message from Meat Loaf's wife that she was by his bedside and trying to call me so Meat could say his final good bye,' he told Richard Wilkins on Weekend Today.

'It's really sad Richard,' he added. 

Speaking to the Channel Nine entertainment reporter, Harley said dealing with the star's death has been a 'pretty shattering experience.'

Harley also noted that he'd been in and out of sleep and missed the opportunity to farewell his dying pal.

'I'm just recovering from Covid myself. So I've been doing a bit of sleeping and I didn't get the call. By the time I rang back he slipped into coma and and didn't make it through the night.'

Harley and Meat Loaf had been long-time friends, often keeping in touch via phone calls due to the Texas native being based in USA.  

The two crossed paths during their career in the 1980s and 1990s and continued to  work alongside one another. 

Their most recent collaboration was when Meat Loaf performed at the 2011 AFL Grand Final in Melbourne.

Meat Loaf died on Friday surrounded by his family. TMZ cites sources who say he passed away after becoming critically ill with Covid-19.  

Two weeks ago, his daughter Pearl posted on Instagram that a number of her 'friends and family' had tested positive.
