Married At First Sight expert Mel Schilling has set the record straight on how much power producers really have on the reality series.

Mel denied producers intervened to Now to Love this week, even going as far as saying the cast were free to go if they wanted to while filming.

'They all have choice. We're not holding anyone captive!' the star told the publication.

The relationship expert went on to say often cast members simply didn't like their edits on the Channel Nine series.

'When people come out of the experiment and they see themselves on tele and perhaps don't like what they see it's very natural for them to become defensive and to look for ways to explain away their behaviour and that's one of them,' she said.

'We've heard it all!' she finished.

Mel's comments come following the release of a new trailer for the forthcoming ninth season.

A trailer released by Channel Nine hints there will be plenty of tears and heartbreak as the mismatched couples clash after saying 'I do'.

The most confronting moment sees a groom throw his wedding ring towards his bride in anger as he storms out of a dinner party.

Set to Paloma Faith's Only Love Can Hurt Like This, the teaser begins with glamorous brides Holly Greenstein, Selin Mengu and Olivia Frazer walking down the aisle.

Viewers are then introduced to an excitable groom, previously identified as law clerk Matt Ridley, greeting his bride.

'He's the person I have been waiting my entire life for,' one optimistic bride then says, before things take a turn when another is seen breaking down into tears.

'I've cheated... I've lied,' a voice believed to belong to American groom Andrew Davis is heard saying.

Another scene sees fashion brand manager Samantha Moitzi cry, 'You never think that someone who's meant to love you can hurt you that much,' as she wipes a tear from her eye.
