Australia's consumption of streaming services like Stan, Netflix, Binge and Disney+ has surpassed commercial free-to-air TV viewership in the country for the first time.
The revealing data came from the second annual media content consumption survey, which was commissioned by the federal Department of Communications and conducted by the Social Research Centre in September 2021.
It's the first time research has found that more Australians are tuning into online subscription services rather than commercial television, with 62 per cent viewing programs on these services compared to 58 per cent watching free-to-air TV.

'As this survey shows, we are seeing continuing and significant shifts in the way that Australians consume screen content, with the take-up of online and on-demand platforms… growing strongly,' Communications Minister Paul Fletcher told The Australian.
Mr Fletcher said Aussies are 'responding enthusiastically' to 'greater choice in content offerings'.
'These trends have important implications for media policy and regulation. Such regulation should be platform-neutral as far as possible, including in relation to such issues as local content requirements,' he added.
