Ziegler stars as Velma in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, which has been nominated for seven Academy Awards at tonight's show, including for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director.

In February she spoke about her second audition for the movie and getting to meet the famous director in an interview with Collider.

'Then I got called in to [the] New York audition, and I was like, "I don’t know what’s gonna happen." I go in and Steven Spielberg’s in the room and I’m just like, "Cool! Okay, so this is it. This is what’s happening."'

Maddie also stars as Mia Reed in The Fallout, a 2021 American teen drama film about a high school student trying to navigate her trauma following a school shooting.

The beauty also opened about about her transition from dancer to actor in a Janury interview with Collider.  'When I was younger, I was just like, "Oh yeah, dance til I die. That’s it. That’s my path forever." For some reason, that was all I could think of until I started doing music videos with Sia.'

'I kind of realized, "Oh, I’m literally playing a character in all these music videos and I’m becoming these different roles," and a huge part of the rehearsal process was not just the movement, but the actual intention behind the emotions.'

'And then I was like, "Okay, yeah. This is definitely something I want to do," so I started auditioning and started getting little roles here and there, and then one day it kind
