Two contestants on Sunday night's American Idol on ABC had COVID but were still voted on into the Top 5, Noah Thompson and Fritz Hager, while Jay Copeland and Christian Guardino were eliminated.

Twenty-year-old construction worker Noah Thompson, from Louisa, Kentucky, was voted on despite the fact that he had to perform two of his songs quarantined in his hotel room.

'I'm not going to wish you any bad luck but when you're sick, you're sounding a lot better,' judge Lionel Richie, 72, told Noah when he finished singing. 'You nailed it.'

Katy Perry, 37, agreed.

'I think adrenaline took over,' Katy said. 'I think you just had to surrender 'do the best that you can' and you did the best you have ever done tonight.'

Fritz Hager, 22, from Tyler, Texas, who tested positive that day, also moved on in the competition.

Fritz and Noah were two of top seven contestants that performed two songs on the show and also two of the five that were voted into the Top 5.

The first challenge of the night was to sing a song that was on TikTok. Guest mentor will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas met with each contestant before they performed to give them tips. 

Leah Marlene, 20, from Normal, Illinois went first and performed 'Electric Love' by Børns.

When she finished, Lionel told her she commanded the stage during the song.

'You did a wonderful job,' Lionel said.

Jay Copeland, 23, a medical receptionist from Salisbury, Maryland performed Whitney Houston's song 'I Have Nothing.' 

Jay said he picked the song because it was popular on animal videos on TikTok. will.i.am advised him to sing the song in a lower key.

Lionel gave him a standing ovation when he finished.

'Okay baby blue ends on a sophisticated note,' Katy Perry said when he finished. 'You did justice to a Whitney Houston song. It was wonderful.'

Fritz played his original song 'All My Friends' that he released on TikTok for will.i.am who told him that he was impressed with his original song.

'You've got a special talent,' will.i.am said.

Instead of performing live for the audience and judges because of his COVID diagnosis, the show played Fritz' rehearsal video from the day before. 

Fritz then appeared from his hotel room and told the judges he was feeling good.

'I'm just ready to get back on that stage, hopefully, '' Fritz said.

'Thank God we video tape rehearsal,' Luke Bryan said. 'Man you got just all the tools. You have the creativity to go a long way. Sorry you can't be here, Feel better get back safe.'

Ryan asked Fritz what he was doing to pass the time.

'I'm literally just laying in bed sleeping,' Fritz said.

Christian Guardinio, 22, from Patchogue, New York, turned to will.i.am for advice on performing Justin Bieber & benny blanco cover 'Lonely.' 

He told him that the song resonated with him because he was born with a retinal condition. will.i.am told him to own the words of the song when he performed.

'You were not born broken,' Lionel told him. 'You were born unique. …the reason you are on this stage is that you are unique on this planet. Your talent is shining through like a diamond.'

Ryan then shared with him a celebrity shout out for him from Michael Bublé, who told him it was really nice to meet him last week.

'By the way you killed your prep of The Circle of Life,' Bublé said. 'I have an idea what you would think of in a couple of weeks singing with me on the finale.

Ryan said yes on Christian's behalf.

'Are you kidding me,' Christian screamed. 'Yeah, oh my God I'm going to celebrate that for sure.'

Huntergirl, 23, a singer from Winchester, Tennessee told will.i.am that she posted often on TikTok and that the song she was doing, 'You Broke Me First' by Tate McRae was one she first heard on the platform.

'You have a really awesome voice,' will.i.am said. 'Just make sure that whatever emotion you are feeling that you convey to your audience.'

'You are just such a natural on that stage,' Katy said when she finished. 'You don't even need the fringe but you got the fringe so it's twice as nice.'

Noah was next and he told will.i.am that he's not very good with social media and that his buddy signed him up for this competition as a joke. will.i.am encouraged him to find some way to connect with the song he was going to perform.

Noah then sang his song 'Painted Blue' by Sunday Best from his hotel room. All three judges stood and applauded when he finished.

'American Idol is so good at finding stars,' Luke said. 'They are stars whether they are on the stage or sitting in a hotel room with Covid. Great, great job.'

Luke asked him how he was doing. Noah said he was getting through it.
