Married At First Sight star Daniel Holmes has opened up about his past addiction to steroids and how his girlfriend Carolina Santos helped him kick the dangerous habit.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia this week, the fitness coach, 31, revealed his juiced-up bodybuilding days are behind him after almost a decade of steroid abuse took a serious toll on his physical and mental health.

'It's definitely behind me. I'll get really real, I've been doing steroids from the age of 23 to just before I went on MAFS - non-stop,' he confessed.

'What a lot of steroid addicts - like myself - would do is a "blast" - that's when you do a lot of steroids for a competition. And then you would do what's called "cruising" - when you come down to a low dose, and then continue.

'And then when you're ready, you go back up and "blast" again. That cycle is essentially something I'd done since I was 23. I'm 31 now and stopped before MAFS.'

Daniel said he didn't realise he was addicted to steroids until he decided to stop.
