Tom Cruise appears to have broken a career-long habit of making himself look as tall as his co-stars, eagle-eye Top Gun: Maverick fans have noticed.

The actor, 59, who plays Lt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the film, has a 5ft 7in stature, and often uses visual tricks to make himself match up to the height of the other taller members of the cast.

But, in the sequel to the 1986 movie about fighter jet pilots, no effort has been made to change the appearance of Tom's height.

Hollywood heavyweight Tom is visibly shorter than 6ft 1in Miles Teller, who plays Lieutenant Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw, in the flick.

Bradley is the son of Maverick's late best friend Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw, who was played by Anthony Edwards in the original film, who is 6ft 2in tall.

However, well executed camera angles were used to ensure Tom did not look shorter in the first movie.

In a publicity shot for the original film, 5ft 10in Kelly McGillis is seen leaning on Tom's shoulder on closer inspection, but at a quick glance she appears to be of a similar height to the star with the tops of their heads at the same level.

Taking to Twitter after noticing Tom embrace his height, one movie fan wrote: 'Thank you to Top Gun: Maverick for not even attempting to make Tom Cruise look taller and just letting Mav be the short king he is.'

Someone else wrote: 'Best part about the new Top Gun was that they fully committed to embracing Tom Cruise for the short king he is.'
