Mumford & Sons' lead singer Marcus Mumford is launching a solo career, according to a new report.

The star, 35, who has played in the folk rock band since 2007 alongside Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane, is said to have made his solo announcement while playing at a Spotify bash at a villa in the French Riviera on Monday.

The announcement comes 12 months after banjoist Winston Marshall, 34, quit the group after he was pilloried by a 'viral mob' for the 'sin' of praising a right wing reporter on social media.

Page Six reports that Winston, who shares two children with wife Carey Mulligan, told the party that he was performing new music for the first time, which would be available on Spotify.

A guest told the website: 'He just said today is day one for his next thing.'

Mailonline has contacted representatives for Marshall and Spotify for comment.

The band's last album - Delta - was released in 2018 and reached number two in the UK album charts and topped the US Billboard 200. They released single, Blind Leading The Blind in 2019.
