Lena Dunham's latest feature film Sharp Stick sees her play a pregnant wife whose husband is tangled in an affair with a 'naive' younger woman.

The 36-year-old Girls star wrote and directed the coming-of-age dramedy, which debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival in January.

And on Thursday a red-band trailer for Sharp Stick premiered on the film's distributor Utopia's official YouTube page ahead of its limited theatrical release on July 29.

According to the official synopsis for Sharp Stick, the film follows 'a naïve 26-year-old' named Sarah Jo (played by The Society's Kristine Froseth) who 'longs to be seen' as she lives life 'on the fringes of Hollywood with her mother and sister.'

Sarah Jo's world is turned upside down 'when she begins an affair with her older employer' Josh (played by The Walking Dead's Jon Bernthal).

Things are further complicated by the fact that Josh's wife Heather (played by Dunham) is currently pregnant with their second child.

The unorthodox experience thrusts Sarah Jo into 'an education on sexuality, loss and power.'

The full-length trailer gives fans a clear look at Sarah Jo's sexual naïveté by opening on a scene of the character using Google to watch 'two people having sex' for the first time.

Through narration, Sarah Jo recalls 'having her heartbroken' after unexpectedly falling in 'love' with her employer Josh while caring for his and wife Heather's special-needs child.

She admits to her sister Treina (played by Zola's Taylour Paige) that she's 'never had a crush' which only raises the stakes regarding her feelings for Josh.
