'About a year & half ago I wrote a song about the story of a girl who always lived on the outside, looking in. Figuratively & literally,' tweeted the Red singer, 32.

She continued: 'The juxtaposition of her loneliness & independence. Her curiosity & fear all tangled up. Her persisting gentleness & the world's betrayal of it.'

Continuing on in a follow-up tweet, Taylor revealed that she wrote Carolina 'alone in the middle of the night' and that she called on her collaborator Aaron Dessner to bring the song to life.

'[Aaron] and I meticulously worked on a sound that we felt would be authentic to the moment when this story takes place.

She attached the song's stunning lyric video, which features footage of Where The Crawdads Sing star Daisy Edgar-Jones from the forthcoming film.

Earlier in the day, Taylor surprised fans by announcing she'd be releasing Carolina at midnight Thursday in a post shared to her Instagram just hours before.
