James Corden has hinted at Gavin and Stacey's potential return as he admitted he will have 'more free time' after returning to the UK next year.

The comedian, 43, is set to step down as the host of the Late Late show at the end of next season and he teased that he might have time for other projects after that.

Speaking at London's Freemasons Hall on Monday, James said that he trusts the show's co-creator Ruth Jones 'judgement' about when or if the sitcom will make a comeback.

According to The Sun, James said: 'Ruth's judgement is always bang on, she is such an incredible judge and she instinctively will know when it's right.

'And look, I'll have a bit more free time, maybe that'll be the time to get together and talk about something.

'But I trust her judgement so much that if it's right, we'll do it.'

Earlier in the day, James - who writes the sitcom with Ruth - admitted that he 'wishes' he could say that it was up to him when the beloved Welsh comedy returns as he spoke to Vernon Kay on Radio 2.

'The best thing about Gavin and Stacey is that it's Ruth and if I'm being completely honest, her judgement is exceptional,' he added.

The 2019 Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, left fans on the edge of their seats as it ended on a cliffhanger when Nessa (Ruth) proposes to Smithy (James).

And James hinted it would not be the end for the BBC show, adding: 'It's so great and I realise the ending of that special does very definitely tease something else.'

The actor also hinted at logistical issues with writing Gavin and Stacey, saying he and Ruth cannot write separately or virtually over Zoom.

'We've just got to be in a room together, talking with a pack of Post-It Notes and a pen and at some point we get a laptop out, but that's even way down the line,' he explained.

James revealed that he plans to see the Stella writer, 55, over the summer but said he 'doubted' that they would talk about the show.

MailOnline has contacted Ruth's representatives for comment.

His comments come after BBC bosses confirmed that a Gavin and Stacey reunion will happen 'one day', leaving fans waiting on tenterhooks.

But earlier this month, fans were left convinced the big day was near as Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman were spotted filming together in Barry Island, Wales, where the series is set.

The pair - who play Mick and Pam Shipman - were seen relaxing in deckchairs as they filmed an advert for Barrybados, a souvenir shop in the area that sells Gavin and Stacey paraphernalia.

Taking to Twitter, fans penned: 'Waking up to the news of a new Gavin & Stacey series being made… Doesn't get much better than that!'; 'Oh my Christ!! Do we dare dream of another Gavin & Stacey???';

'So Mick & Pam spotted on Barry Island filming. Is a new series of Gavin & Stacey happening? #GavinandStacey'; 'ahhhhh as if Pam and Mick have been spotted filming in Barry Island! really hope there's another series of Gavin & Stacey on the way';

'Gavin & Stacey S4 here we come!'; 'Please hope it's happening #GavinandStacey Pam and mick spotted in Barry'; 'Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb (BLOODY PAM AND MICK) have been spotted filming ON BARRY ISLAND! *deep breaths.'

Gavin and Stacey ran for three series between 2007 and 2010 before returning for Christmas special - the most watched comedy in 17 years - in 2019.

Last year, BBC bosses confirmed the beloved show will return 'one day'.

While outlining the upcoming Christmas television schedule, the channel's Chief Content Officer, Charlotte Moore, discussed the future of the BBC One sitcom.

She explained: 'That wasn't something that was going to happen this year,' and followed that up with: 'One day.'

But Mathew Horne recently shut down speculation of a Gavin and Stacey reunion, admitting that it would be hard to get some 'successful people' on board.

The actor, 43, claimed that fans desiring the comedy's return 'is not enough of a reason', adding that the writers 'want to make sure that they have a story' first.
