Travis Barker is 'expected to be OK' after he was hospitalized while suffering from pancreatitis which is believed to have been 'triggered' by a recent colonoscopy, it was claimed Thursday.

A source told E! that his wife Kourtney Kardashian is trying to stay positive as she remains by his side at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles.

The source added: 'He was in extreme pain yesterday, and he and Kourtney were both really worried. It was to the point where he could barely walk.'

The mother-of-three is also said to be staying positive as her husband recovers.

'Kourtney is trying to lift his spirits and hates seeing him in excruciating pain,' the source said.

The 46-year-old Blink-182 drummer remains under medical care at at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, where Kourtney remains by his side.

According to TMZ, Travis' doctors believe that his pancreatitis - which is an inflammation of the pancreas - was 'triggered' by a recent colonoscopy.

Sources tell the site that Barker underwent the colonoscopy exam recently; the procedure is usually performed to look for changes in the large intestine and rectum, such as swollen, irritated tissues, polyps or cancer.

However, in very rare cases, a colonoscopy - which involves a long tube being inserted into the rectum - can cause pancreatitis, a condition that usually requires hospitalization and can last for several days or, in some cases, occur over many years.

Symptoms of the condition - which can also be caused by gallstones or chronic and heavy alcohol use - include upper abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

The agonizing condition that landed Travis Barker in hospital: What is pancreatitis and how serious is it?

Pancreatitis is when the pancreas — a small organ behind the stomach that helps with digestion — becomes inflamed.

There are two types of the condition; Acute pancreatitis, which is triggered suddenly and subsides within about a week, and chronic pancreatitis, where the pancreas is inflamed from permanent damage over many years.

Acute pancreatitis is often linked to gallstones — which form in the gallbladder by the liver — and drinking too much alcohol.

But in rare cases it could also be triggered by a colonoscopy.

In one example published in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports, a 53-year-old woman developed pancreatitis after having a routine colonoscopy to check for possible cancers.

Symptoms of acute pancreatitis include:

Suddenly suffering severe pain in the center of the abdomen; Feeling or being sick; Having a temperature above 100F (38C).

Patients suffering from the condition are generally admitted to hospital.

Treatment includes being put on an intravenous drip and receiving pain relief. Patients may also be given liquid food through a tube in their stomach and oxygen through tubes in their nose.

Most cases of acute pancreatitis see patients discharged from hospital within a few days and recover after about a week.

But in some cases patients can suffer severe illnesses which may leave long-term complications. In very rare cases it can prove fatal.

About 220,000 people are diagnosed with acute pancreatitis in the U.S. every year, and 80,000 will be diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis, figures from the Pancreas Foundation suggest.

Meanwhile, a source told PEOPLE on Wednesday that Kourtney 'won't leave his side.'

'Kourtney was worried yesterday. They both were,' the source added. 'Travis was suffering from extreme stomach pain and could barely walk.'

The star was taken to a Los Angeles hospital by ambulance on Tuesday after suffering from the medical issue, with his new wife Kourtney by his side as he arrived at local facility West Hills.

He was later transferred to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in an ambulance - while Kourtney, 43, followed behind in her Range Rover. It was not initially known what condition the rocker was suffering from, however 'multiple sources connected to the family' have now told TMZ that he has been diagnosed with pancreatitis as a result of a colonoscopy.

The procedure can be life-saving treatment as it allows your doctor to check the insides of your colon and rectum for cancer and polyps, which can be early signs of cancer.

However, although it is considered to be a fairly safe exam, it is not without risk and the most common side effect is stomach pain, cramping or the feeling of being bloated afterward. In very rare cases, the procedure can also cause pancreatitis - although there is limited understanding as to how this occurs, according to the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports
