Avatar fans have finally gotten an answer to the question of how Sigourney Weaver would factor into the film's sequel after her character died in the first movie.

It has been revealed that Weaver, 72, will play a teenager in the long awaited second installment of the James Cameron epic, per a new Empire cover story.

Sigourney will leave her human form behind in The Way of Water for the role of Kiri, the adopted Na'vi daughter of characters Jake and Neytiri.

'I think we all pretty much remember what we were feeling as adolescents,' Weaver told Empire. 'I certainly do. I was 5' 10' or 5' 11' when I was 11. I felt strongly that Kiri would feel awkward a lot of the time.'

Adding: 'She's searching for who she is. I was thrilled to be given that challenge by Jim.'

Jim, AKA director James Cameron also told the outlet that he was well aware that the veteran actress taking on the far younger role would be an exercise in her acting skills.

He said:  'As an acting challenge, it's big. We're gonna have a 60-something actor playing a character [decades younger than] her actual biological age. Sig thought it was all kinds of fun.'

'Sigourney just became younger,' the Oscar winning director reflected. 'She looked younger, she had more energy, and she never quite stepped out of Kiri for our whole capture period. She had a glow on her face and lightness in her step and a fun spirit.'

The role is a far cry from playing Dr. Grace Augustine in the first film. In addition to getting into the mindset of a teen, Weaver had the added challenge of filming underwater.

The science fiction film, which will be released on December 16, is titled The Way of Water and Cameron took that quite literally, shooting a large portion of the movie in H20.

This next chapter is set over a decade after the events of the first film and will focus on Jake, his partner Neytiri, and their growing family.
