She welcomed a second child, a daughter named Iris Ella, with husband Tom Pitfield in April.

And Catherine Tyldesley has revealed that the couple have planned to store their daughter's stem cells found in her umbilical cord, stating that 'one of the most important things to us was being able to protect Iris's future.'

The former Coronation Street, 38, star took to Instagram on Tuesday where she shared a throwback labour snap and reflected on the 'overwhelming' amount things to learn when preparing to give birth.

Alongside a plethora of snaps featuring her baby girl, Catherine told of the her amazement to learn that the stem cells from the cord can be stored for possible future use if Iris were to become ill at any point.

According to the NHS, the umbilical cord is 'rich in blood stem cells, similar to those found in bone marrow, and these can be used to treat many different cancers, immune deficiencies and genetic disorders'.

Catherine penned: 'When you find out you're having a baby there are so many things to consider, from your pregnancy journey to your birth plan.

'There are lots of new things to learn along the way and with so much information available it can become a little overwhelming. However, one of the most important things to us was being able to protect Iris's future as much as possible. 

'After some research we came across @smartcellsofficial and learned that the baby's umbilical cord is a unique source of stem cells and these cord blood stem cells are able to treat and cure over 80 conditions. The idea of collecting and storing the umbilical cord stem cells of our baby at birth was so amazing especially as they can then be used in the future if needed.'

The star added that she was 'pleased' to learn this when she did and felt 'comforted' to know that the cells were there if ever needed for her daughter.
